Festival Maribor: Memories and Transformations

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70
Arnold Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht, Op. 4
Each in a unique way, the two compositions by Tchaikovsky and Schoenberg are imbued with a sense of the transformative power of time. Souvenir de Florence is a nostalgic tribute to a city where time stood still for Tchaikovsky in a moment of beauty and creativity. The music is full of Mediterranean passion and emotional warmth, as if the composer sought to preserve each moment for eternity. Schoenberg’s sextet Verklärte Nacht is a masterpiece of musical Expressionism that reveals a dramatic transformation. It is a story of forgiveness, inner strength and the opportunity for a new life through love. In both works, time is not just a backdrop but a living force that can convey us to memories full of light or plunge us into inner storms. This music bears witness to an emotional journey through time, a search for a lost and rediscovered self.
