DOKUDOC: Photographer

The documentary film FOTOGRAF reveals the extraordinary story of amateur photographer Peter Naglič, who took more than 10,000 photographs during the first half of the 20th century. In seemingly everyday scenes, Naglič recognised compelling subjects and photographed them as visual stories, long before the emergence of modern photojournalism. On the reverse side of his photographs, he recorded locations, dates and descriptions of the subjects, thereby placing them within the context of time and place. Through his photographs, Peter Naglič captured the birth of modern Slovenian identity. With the help of artificial intelligence applications and in collaboration with the creators of the British studio Untold Garden, we also brought selected photographs by Naglič to life, creating Slovenian historical “film footage” for the documentary that, in reality, had never been filmed.
