From the Balkans With Love
Love songs of the Balkans

GLAS Vocal Ensemble
Nataša Mirković, choirmaster
We probably all agree that love makes the world go around. Of all the arts, it is music that is most organically intertwined with love. This is evidenced by the intensity, ineffability and penetrating power of music, which is most clearly revealed precisely through musical notes. The fact that love reflects the very essence of human existence is particularly apparent to people from places marked by historical unrest, loss and constant change.
One can sense this strongly in the music of the Balkan traditions, in which love is not just one theme among many; it is a fundamental way of telling the story of life, a story of happiness and pain, belonging and loss, longing and memory.
The vocal ensemble Glas is dedicated to the rich musical heritage of the Balkans. The singers, all of whom are women resident in Vienna, have Bosnian, Croatian, Slovenian, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Iranian and Austrian roots, bringing a cultural wealth that is directly reflected in the sound, expression and artistic profile of the ensemble. They are, however, connected by one thing above all else: a love of music and the expressive power of the voice.
