Lent Festival: Adrian Younge

Adrian Younge is a musical genius, period! He is the modern Quincy Jones: a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, producer, composer, head of the renowned analog studio Linear Labs and the Jazz is Dead label in Los Angeles, an Emmy Award winner, and a revolutionary in combining retro-soul and funk with hip-hop influences, packaged into a unique cinematic experience. Truly unique!
His debut, Black Dynamite, a modern masterpiece in the tradition of blaxploitation films, became an instant hit and today enjoys cult status, with the Los Angeles Times praising it as "one of the best soundtracks of all time." In 2011, Younge created the first part of the soul trilogy Something About April, which represents a dark mix of psychedelic soul and film instrumentals, and which he will also present in Maribor.
It is incredible that Adrian Younge has recorded over 50 albums to date, including for one of the most revolutionary contemporary labels, Jazz Is Dead, which reimagines albums with legends like Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith and Tony Allen, as well as Brazilian icons like João Donato, Hyldon, Marcos Valle and Azymuth. His music has also made a strong mark on today's hip-hop scene - samples from his records can be heard on artists like Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar, Common, DJ Premier and Alchemist; Adrian Younge has also produced albums for artists like Snoop Dogg, Cee Lo and Rakim.
In his Slovenian premiere, Adrian Younge will present a compact band that transcends the boundaries of cosmic soul, hypnotic jazz and rock psychedelia. His concerts are a unique experience, driven by raw drum breakbeats, fuzz-infused electric guitars, rare analog synthesizers and the breathtaking soul vocals of the exceptional singer Loren Oden. His concert will be a continuation of the now legendary performances of bands such as Monophonics, José James and Ibrahim Electric, which have always provided a unique conclusion to the Lent Festival.
