Susan Abulhawa

We will discuss Palestine and the world today with Susan Abulhawa, a globally recognized writer and author of Mornings in Jenin (Cankarjeva založba, 2023), which has sold out several times and been reprinted in Slovenian translation. This year also saw the publication of the essay collection she helped edit, Every Moment Is a Life: Gaza in the Time of Genocide.
We will talk about ongoing colonial oppression and exploitation; why literature can be more powerful than ethno-nationalist hatred; and what it means to organize a literary festival of Palestinian voices and stories in the United States.
Susan Abulhawa is a Palestinian-American writer, scientist, and activist, founder of Playgrounds for Palestine, and co-organizer of the Palestine Writes. Her debut novel, Mornings in Jenin, is now an international bestseller, translated into more than 30 languages. She is one of the most important intellectual voices critically addressing contemporary forms of colonial domination and emphasizing the importance of international solidarity among oppressed peoples. She is also the author of the novels The Blue Between Sky and Water and Against the Loveless World, as well as the poetry collection My Voice Sought the Wind.
The conversation with Susan Abulhawa will be moderated by Urška Breznik from Pekarna Magdalenske mreže.
The event is co-organized by Pekarna Magdalenske mreže, Lutkovno gledališče Maribor, and Mariborska knjižnica.
