DOKUDOC: When I Get Out

At Dob, Slovenia’s central prison, filmmaker Metod Pevec and psychiatrist Vladimir Milošević enter a closed world with a camera and a shared belief that even behind prison walls, stories remain alive. Over the course of a year and a half, a group of men convicted of serious crimes take part in a process that leads them back to childhood memories, family histories and formative wounds — and forward, towards the uncertain prospect of life after prison. When I Get Out does not look for easy explanations or simple moral conclusions. Instead, it observes how complex criminal identity can be, how deeply it is shaped by family, violence, shame and silence, and how, at the very bottom, the need for creativity, closeness and meaning can unexpectedly emerge. This is not a prison film in the conventional sense. It is a film about human beings in extreme circumstances — and about the fragile possibility of change.
